Adeshina Bamgboye
grew-up not only in a slum but also in abject poverty and shame. His parents
were extremely poor; barely had enough to feed Shina and his siblings but his determination
to become a success story made him try his hands on so many ventures even as a
youngster. “We were so poor that even the poor would call us poor.” Shina
added.
On several occasions, he
would skip school to hawk puff-puff and burns so that he could have enough
money to feed in school and on several weekends, he would find a construction
site where he could serve as a labourer to raise money for books and
stationeries as it was a difficult task for his parents to afford such luxury.
Tozo soon got to a
turning-point; he was, one early morning, going to a construction site instead
of school when two of his friends accosted him. After much drilling and
pressure; he finally opened-up on his
mission, told them why he had to do that for survival. They persuaded him to
give up on the job and face his academics or choose a profession if he knew he
couldn’t cope.
“They advised me to stop
but I wasn’t convinced; I only caved-in
to their pressures to fulfil all righteousness – but the day marked a new
beginning for me. There was an accident at the construction site and some of my
co-labourers died as the building collapsed. I may have been killed in the
mishap but for those guys I hate to love.”
Baba Oloye as a primary school chap had been an apprentice at
his uncle’s auto repair garage but had to run back to his parents because of
persistent beating and torture. He used that experience as leverage. “I told my
friends I was returning to auto-repair training after my Form Three
examinations. I wrote an application to DAN NEWTON NIG.LTD at Ogba, a franchise
holder of SKODA and there I learnt the rudiments of auto-mechanics for three
years.”
Shina Bamgboye after
graduation from the company started a small repair garage in front of his
gradma’s house but because he was determined to excel and live better life than
roadside mechanics, went to his friends for corporate packaging and
administrative training.
“With the knowledge I
garnered from DAN NEWTON NIG.LTD and my friends, I started writing to corporate
organisations that used SKODA as their official cars for contracts. It paid off! Some of the companies that couldn’t
afford the charges of big companies opted for me – and through quality jobs,
referrals, honesty and prompt delivery, the patronage grew larger and I became
‘Shina Skoda’ to many.
“Today, I’d graduated
from SKODA to KIA and to HONDA and TOYOTA; applying the same techniques. My
customers could attest to the jobs we do and that is why we have among our
clienteles - banks such as GTBank, Dataflex, Meadow Hall, Main-One Cable and
other corporate organisations and individuals - trooping to our VI workshops
without minding the distance.”
Shina Bamgboye, despite not
having a secondary school certificate, is the President/CEO of Tozo Motors &
Co. and Adeshina Bamgboye Mechanical Works Ltd. His company took in
trainee-engineers on internship and employed graduates for certain jobs. He is
also a traditional chieftain in Fadunsi-Ijoko and Owode-Otta kingdoms.
Although, Shina is
happily married to Zekinat and they are blessed with five beautiful children,
yet he admitted that the journey to the top wasn’t rosy; he had lived without
having money to settle his children’s school fees and there was a time in his
life when he couldn’t even provide for his family as a man but he overcame because
of his tenacity, honesty, skills and God-factor.
“Any height can be scaled if you believe in your prowess and give it
your all without relegating God to the back.” Shina advised.
