FACT FILE: George Oppong Weah, From Pitch to Presidency

Did you know that the Football legend, George Oppong Weah ?

• Was born on October 1st, 1966
• Grew up in a Moronvia slum where he started playing football as a teenager
• He was discovered by the popular coach, Arsene Wenger, and so relocated to France in Europe for a professional football career.
• He played for AS Monaco, PSG, AC Milan, Chelsea and Olympique Marseille.
• Won CAF Player of the Year, Fifa Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or in 1995 and several soccer accolades 
• He is a member of Fifa Hall of Fame featuring 100 outstanding footballers of all time.
• He formed a political party, Congress for Democratic Change in 2005
• He contested the Liberian Presidency and was defeated because his opponents capitalised on his lack of education.
• In 2007, he ran as Vice President and lost
• In 2014, he won a Senatorial seat representing Montsserado County
• At last, in 2017, he emerged the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia.
